With confidence and skill improvement come fitness and (in most cases!) addiction to rowing. The Development Squad aims to provide a springboard for members to progress into the Mens and Womens Programs where the focus is more competitive.
Rowing Refresher
Our Rowing Referesher course is suitable for those that have completed a Learn to Row program more than 3 months ago or have previous rowing experience. This single session covers the basic rowing technique, boat handling skills and river rules.
Requirements
- Completed our Learn to Row Course more than 3 months ago, or have a similar level of experience.
- Moderate level of fitness required
- Over 18 years old
- Must be able to swim 100m
Commitment
1 x 1.5 hour session in groups of up to 8 people

Development Squad
The Development Squad at MRC provides beginner participants with the opportunity to develop their skills, and is especially geared towards those coming directly out of the Learn to Row program. The aim is to provide a casual learning environment where the focus is on improvement of skill and confidence in the boat.
Coaching is conducted in crews of up to 8 people, emphasising the importance of team work, commitment and the enjoyment that comes with it.
Requirements
- Completed our Learn to Row Course less than 3 months ago, or our Rowing Refresher Course or have a similar level of experience.
- Minimum 4 week attendance
- 2 training sessions a week (days and times will be determined based on coaches availability).
- Over 18 years old
- Can swim 100m and be able to participate in sports that require a moderate fitness level.
NOTE: Morning sessions start at 6am, afternoon sessions start at 6pm.
Attendance
You are required to attend all sessions as arranged. Once you are booked into those sessions, they go ahead whether you can or cannot attend.
Cost
The cost of the course is $180 (including GST) per person (8 sessions).

The Development Squad course is run out of Melbourne Rowing Club boat shed on the banks of the Yarra River.
