Victorian Young Person in Sport Award

kieranstark2.jpgI'm very excited to announce that Kieran Stark has been selected as the Victorian Young Person in Sport Award Winner, by the Department of Community Planning and Development, otherwise known through the Go For Your Life program.

Kieran was selected as one of three finalists from 32 nominees in his category. The significance of his achievement was not lost on the audience. Considering the other two incredible finalists, the announcement received the greatest applause and appreciation from the audience for the night (and that wasn't just the rowdy nominee support team!).

Kieran gave a fantastic speech at times personal, poignant, humorous and all the way pumped with testosterone (by Kieran’s own declaration!). Sadly for Kieran, Channel Ten were not there to capture him in 'Play of the Day', but the lovely prizes and five minutes under the spotlight surely made up for it!

Meeting The People

Graeme Murpy

What actually keeps the whole place together are the people – the rowers, the volunteers who help in small ways, the committee.. the coaches, the ones who stop and help sort out a boat issue... well we'll get a few interviews happening and we can all get to know the people who make the place work – there's an interview with Graeme Murphy ready to be published and we'll gradually catch up with the other people as we go along.

"There is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." - Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows

Taking The Catch

A female sculler at race pace of 8min for 2000m is travelling at 4.167 meters per second = 15 kilometres per hour.

The edge of the blade is approximately .25cm thick. To execute the perfect catch you need to catch the equivalent sliver of water, in a vertical down attack, as that sliver of water is moving away from the blade at 15klm per hour.

A recent study has determined the need for a Kilogram of power per scull handle is required to execute the catching of the water without missing a %, and thus kicking the boat backward.

The word attack is appropriate, the Italians use the Italian equivalent for the catch. The danger is to drive the blade too deep.

Practise-hand /foot co-ordination - feel and Deltoid lock at the correct depth of the blade, will counter-act too much depth.

I would suggest practising with 5-6 degree pitch.

Happy Catching, Neville

Those Early Mornings...

morning.jpgThe Rasing the Bar program must be working - you see us salving away on the ergos and achieving mightly on the river. In fact everyone is working so hard that I couldn't get an interview to give us an insight into the plan behind it all. Still, Neville Simth's training regime included enough time to give us a tip of the month...

We are here for the rowing – some would say that's an excuse for coffee at South bank – but the results at the Saltwater Classic and the Head of the Goulburn would suggest that we have been training pretty hard.

In the Saltwater Classic there were MRC wins in FD4x+ (stroke Beaumont), FC4x+ (stroke Wales), FB4x+ (stroke Smart) and FM4x+ (stroke McDonald).

At the Head of the Goulburn MRC recorded wins in Female B Coxed Quad Scull, Melbourne (C), stroke: Marika Upton and Female Masters Coxed Quad Scull, Melbourne (E), stroke: Sue Gould

Sharing The River

ducks.jpgI was actually out on the water in a coxless quad the day the dolphins paid us a visit – did anyone get a picture? The swan couple that nested at the end of the landing produced three cygnets – they've grown well since this picture was taken and last time I saw hem they were in the reeds at the 2km mark.

The Dream Festival has provided us with navigation hazard and that was possibly increased by most of the scullers taking a guess as to the meaning of the marker buoys – did you go through the middle or keep them all to bow side? Keeps you on your toes in the mornings.
